Foreign exchange students adapting
      Cheers erupted in the stands last Thursday when Paulo Fuganti made his first extra point in an American football game. Fuganti is used to playing a different type of football at home in Joinville, Brazil, where soccer is the country's national sport.

County still coping with gas shortage
      Ten days after Hurricane Ike knocked out a portion of the nation's refining capacity, the county government is still grappling with a shortage of gasoline and diesel. The county has less than 3,000 gallons of gas in its fuel tanks, Cherokee County Interim Administrator Ben Clary said Tuesday.

Council hears no objections
      For once, all was silent. A hearing hosted by Blacksburg Town Council regarding the potential demolition of the old Academy Street elementary school and senior center buildings went without opposition last week. The governing body expected little resistance from town residents regarding the fate of the two structures, which have become eyesores for town residents.

POLICE REPORTS
      A vehicle was reported stolen from a Chesnee parking lot last week. According to a report at the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, someone took a green 1994 Cadillac Seville from the Burns Trading Post parking lot. The vehicle was valued at $1,500.

Mother and son grow closer through growing watermelons
      Being the parent of a young child can be difficult, having to be on alert for everything, from what the youth is watching to the items brought in the house. Rarely does Cherokee County resident Brenda Eubanks have to stress about these issues, partly because her 10-year-old son Damian is usually with her.

Michael Gaffney Day celebration Saturday
      Bernadette Swayngim, a Gaffney native, will perform at the Michael Gaffney Day Celebration in Historic Downtown Gaffney on Saturday, September 27. A singer/songwriter, Swayngim has been seriously building her musical career for the past five years, although she actually began singing in front of audiences when she was only eight years old.

Ready, set, hike!
      Ten years after it started, Cherokee County is closing in on another milestone in the effort to build a historic trail. Cherokee County Council formed the Overmountain Victory Trail committee in 1994 and charged it with developing plans for a 35-mile multi-use trail.

Cub Scouts clean up Broad River
      A dog bone and diapers were among the litter local Cub Scouts removed Saturday from the Broad River. Eleven Cub Scouts from Pack 320 spent nearly three hours cleaning a section of the Broad River off Ninety Nine Island Road. The Blacksburg Cub Scout group filled 30 trash bags with litter as part of the Beach Sweep/River Sweep.

First Steps annual meeting
      Cherokee County First Steps will hold its annual meeting Sept. 25 at 5:30 p.m. at Cherokee Community Learning Center. State First Steps Director Susan Devenny is among the speakers that will provide updates on the early childhood initiative. The public is invited to attend.

     Ledger photo by JOE HUGHES II TOUR de PEACH — Approximately 50 local bicyclists rode for miles on Saturday to raise money for cancer research. The Robert Allen Group held its second annual Tour de Peach September 6, with funds from the event going to Relay for Life. Bicyclists had the choice of riding a 30- or 60-mile route in this year's edition of the Tour. "The Robert Allen Group has been a faithful supporter of the Cherokee County Relay for Life for six years. We have continually increased the total we've been able to raise annually," said Lisa Bell director of Human Resources. "In 2008, our facility, with less than 200 employees, turned in $18,000." For the second year, the Tour de Peach raised over $3,000.00.

New Lions Club chartered here
      Last week the Cherokee County Lions Club submitted the final members required to receive a Charter from Lions Clubs International, headquartered in Oak Brook, IL. Twenty two local business men and women, from eight different area cities and from across the state line, have chosen to become Charter Members of this new club.
