New Lions Club chartered here

By Lion PAT CANNON Guiding Lion

Last week the Cherokee County Lions Club submitted the final members required to receive a Charter from Lions Clubs International, headquartered in Oak Brook, IL. Twenty two local business men and women, from eight different area cities and from across the state line, have chosen to become Charter Members of this new club. Anyone that chooses to join within 90 days of the Charter grant will also be listed as Charter Members, an honor to stay with them forever.

An announcement was published in Gaffney the last week of May that Lions of the Upstate were coming to canvas the businesses and government offices of Gaffney to form a second Lions Club.

The current Gaffney Lions Club, chartered in 1929, couldn't offer membership to all of the growing community. Many employees in the area are commuting and unable to be involved in helping meet the humanitarian needs of the community with an evening club. The Cherokee Lions Club will become part of Lions Clubs International, the world's largest service organization with over 46,000 clubs, and 1.3 million men and women as members in over 202 countries and geographic areas. This global network allows the local Lions Clubs to better reach out to of need in the area, our state, nation, and throughout the world!

The first organizational meeting was held June 16th and the subsequent meeting are being held the second and forth Monday of each month at the Lighthouse Buffet Restaurant, on W Floyd Baker Blvd.

Not wasting time, these new Lions have already planned to bring the South Carolina Lions Charitable Services (SCLSC) Mobile Health Screening Unit to a school campus in town to provide free eye exams and hearing tests for all the children they can test in the two day period the first week in November!

Should you desire more information about the Cherokee County Lions Club please call one of these contacts: Lions Brian Ware, Membership Chair 487-5533; or David Wall, President 488-8023.
