Sidney Rice Sidney Rice Fort Mill runners top Gaffney

The highly-ranked Fort Mill cross country team topped Gaffney on Tuesday.

The Fort Mill's boys team is rated fourth in the state, while the school's girls team is ranked No. 1.

Gaffney coach Kevin Hammett said he was encouraged by the performances of Austin Steagall and Jamie George as well as sophomores Inman Love and freshmen Andrew Motts, Casey Ruppe, Chase Steagall and Hayden Bunch.

"These young men are working very hard. Their hard work and the improvements that they have made is really making a difference on the team," Hammett said.

Gaffney swimmers come up short

Fort Mill defeated the Gaffney High swim team by a combined score of 237-94 last week.

In the boys' competition, the Yellow Jackets topped the Indians, 116-46, while the Lady Yellow Jackets beat Gaffney, 121-48.

The following Gaffney High swimmers posted their best times: 200 Yards Freestyle, Sarah Humphries, Karli Green and Wesley Gainey; 200 Yards Individual Medley, Margaret Anne Queen; 50 Yards Freestyle, Carlie Norman and Carsyn Ames; 100 Yards Butterfly, Courtney Bramlett; 100 Yards Freestyle, Brantley Blackwell and Mackenzie Wallace; 500 Yards Freestyle, Meagan Coggins;100 Yards Breaststroke,Sarah Humphries, Cole Gainey and Cody Terry.

Byrnes beats Indian jayvees

In jayvee football action, Mike Wood scored Gaffney's lone touchdown in a 21-6 loss to Byrnes on Thursday.

In ninth-grade play, the Rebels topped the Indians, 35-6.

Woodruff freshmen top Wildcats

The Woodruff junior varsity beat Blacksburg 42-6 on Thursday.

Robert Blackwell had a 76-yard interception return for Blacksburg's only touchdown.

Rice has one catch

Former Gaffney High and South Carolina star wide receiver Sidney Rice had one catch for six yards in the Minnesota Vikings' 30-17 loss to the unbeaten Tennessee Titans on Sunday.

Another former Gaffney High product, Roger McIntosh, was credited withfour tackles to help the Washington Redskins' upset the Dallas Cowboys, 26-24, on Sunday.

Saints blank Queens, 3-0

Limestone College recorded its third shutout of the season with a 3-0 win over Carolinas rival Queens 3-0 on Saturday afternoon.

Joel Moran put Limestone up 1-0 in the 20th minute with a short shot. Dominic Casciato and Ali Benson got the assist.
