Andy Strickland Appalachian State 48,
Presbyterian 14
No. 3 Appalachian State University gained 407 yards in the second half and scored 31 unanswered points en route to the victory over Presbyterian.
Appalachian (2-2) led just 17-14 after a sloppy first half with four dropped passes and lapses in all three phases of the game. Center Brett Irvin (Gaffney) and the Appalachian State offensive line took over in the second half. The offensive line led the Mountaineers to 367 yards rushing after the break.
Appalachian opens Southern Conference play next Saturday against 13th-ranked The Citadel (3- 1, 1-0 SoCon). ASU's homecoming kickoff is set for 3 p.m. and will be televised live on SportSouth.
Wofford 38,
Georgia Southern 37
Georgia Southern staged yet another fourth quarter comeback and eventually went for the gamewinning two point conversion in a game that featured two former Gaffney football players on opposite sides.
Georgia Southern linebacker J.B. Shippy finished the game with two tackles. Wofford wide receiver Andy Strickland caught five passes for 89 yards.
Tyson Petty His biggest catch came in overtime with Wofford facing a fourth and eight.
Quarterback Ben Widmyer threaded a needle to Strickland for a 22-yard pass. Widmeyer scored on a 1-yard touchdown run for Wofford's overtime score.
In order to get to overtime, Georgia Southern had to first make an impressive goal line stand against the nation's second leading rushing team. Wofford (3-1) had a second and goal from the 1 but could not punch it it as the Eagles found themselves down by three with 4:53 remaining.
Georgia Southern took over at their own half-yard line and marched down the field to send the game into overtime on a 25-yard field goal by Adrian Mora.
Georgia Southern went for the win in overtime, but quarterback Antonio Henton's 2- point conversion pass fell incomplete.
Wingate 37,
Tusculum College 33
In a game that saw a pair of ties and five lead changes, 22nd-ranked Wingate University outlasted visiting Tusculum College 37-33 Saturday afternoon. Both teams amassed over 900 yards of offense, but the Wingate defense forced four turnovers.
Gaffney product Jarvis Littlejohn led the Tusculum defense with 10 tackles.
Sam Houston State 49,
Gardner-Webb 33
Rhett Bomar passed for 340 yards and five touchdowns, and ran for another to lead Sam Houston State to a 49-33 win at Gardner- Webb.
Former Gaffney High wide receiver Tyson Petty had three catches for 21 yards and returned a kickoff 16 yards. Nick Melton, who played a couple years in Gaffney, had three catches
