Woodruff rode the arm of quarterback Jake Lambert and a dominant defense to a 49-6 victory over Blacksburg Friday.

Lambert threw for 295 yards and five touchdown passes, including four in the first quarter. Blacksburg gained just five yards on offense in the contest.

Woodruff took a 28-0 lead in the first quarter on touchdown catches of 14-yards by Dominque Woodruff and 12- yards by Trent Bailey. Amos Moates caught a 22-yard pass and B.J. Johnson scored on a 34-yard pass for the Wolverines' other touchdowns.

The Blacksburg offensive line had difficulty blocking Woodruff's defensive line, which spent much of the first half in the Wildcats backfield.

Blacksburg did not record its first positive yardage until a 4-yard run by fullback Bradley Phillips with two minutes left in the first quarter.

"Woodruff is an excellent football team. Even though the score didn't indicate it, I felt we made some strides tonight," Blacksburg coach Mickey Moss said. "The second quarter was the most positive. We hit well on defense and made some good plays, and that's something we just haven't done this season. Our kids didn't quit and played hard."

Quarterback Josh Elmore gave the Blacksburg offense a spark on the opening series of the second half.

Elmore led the Wildcats down the field and hit wide receiver Chris Hames for a 34-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 28-6.

The Blacksburg defense began to play inspired football in the second quarter feeding off a head-rattling tackle by defensive back Josh Elmore and a couple of pass breakups by Chase Hames. Hames had two interceptions as Woodruff was held scoreless until late in the third quarter.

Lambert found Woodruff for a 24-yard touchdown and Bailey scored on a 6-yard run to give the Wolverines a 42-6 lead in the fourth quarter. Woodruff added a late score when it recovered a fumble in the end zone.

Blacksburg (0-5) will hold its homecoming game Friday against Dixie. The game is the final nonregion contest before the Wildcats begin region play in Class A.
