14 windshields smashed by vandals during weeklong spree

More than a dozen motorists find themselves picking up pieces of shattered glass following an apparently mindless vandalism spree that struck Gaffney over the past week.

While it's unclear from police reports if the vandalism was the work of one or many, or even it if was related, it is clear the end results are costly. The estimated damage reported by police in 14 separate acts of vandalism totaled more than $5,000.

Nine of the acts of vandalism occurred between 9 p.m. Sept. 29 and 9 a.m. Sept. 30, through some car owners were able to narrow the times. The acts of vandalism included:

— In the 1100 block of College Drive, the windshield was smashed on a 1984 Pontiac. Damage is estimated at $150.

— In the 1300 block of South Johnson Street, a windshield was smashed on a 1987 Chevrolet Blazer and there were shoe prints on the hood. Damage is estimated at $174.

— In the 800 block of West Buford Street, windshields were smashed on a 1998 Hyundai and a 1991 Toyota and the hoods of both cars were damaged. Repair costs are estimated at $1,500. A stereo was stolen from one of the vehicles.

— In the 200 block of Pine Street, the windshield of a 2003 Nissan Truck was smashed and the vehicle's license plate was stolen. Damage is estimated at $500.

— In the 100 block of Anthony Street, the windshield of a 1996 Dodge truck was broken. Damage is estimated at $200.

— In the 100 block of Hampton Avenue, a windshield was smashed on a 1997 Nissan Altima. The victim was able to pinpoint the time of damage to between 12:30 a.m. and 1:10 a.m. Sept. 30. Damage is estimated at $350.

— In the 300 block of Humphries Street, the windshield of a 2003 Toyota Camry was smashed. Damage is estimated at $300.

— In the 100 block of Adair Lane, the windshield of a 1997 Chrysler was broken. Damage is estimated at $400.

— In the 200 block of Hill Street, the windshield of a 2000 Isuzu Rodeo was broken. Damage is estimated at $300.

— Just a few days earlier, five other cars were vandalized in a similar fashion. Between 9 p.m. Sept. 25 and 9 a.m. Sept. 26, the windshields of two vehicles on Settlemeyer Street and Second Avenue were smashed; two other cars' windshields were damaged on Elmore Street and Hackberry Drive; and another car's windshield was damaged on General Drive.

A truck was reported stolen from Springwood Drive on Sept. 28.

According to the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, someone grabbed the keys to a 2007 Dodge Ram from a home in the 300 block and drove off with the $20,000 vehicle.

A South Granard Street convenience store was burglarized Sept. 27.

According to the Gaffney Police Department, someone smashed the front door of Sunny's Quick Stop between 1:15 a.m. and 2:20 a.m. and stole money from a crash drawer.

Police said they found the phone lines had been cut on the building. A video surveillance camera showed the burglar was wearing a dark coat and a white hat with ear flaps.

About $1,600 in theft losses were reported and an inventory was to be conducted on the store's supply of cigarettes and lottery tickets, according to police.
