A burned mattress sits outside a home at 208 Wilbur St. in Blacksburg, the scene of a Friday night fire. Blacksburg Volunteer Fire Department members pulled an unconscious man from the burning bedroom of the home and emergency responders whisked him away to a helicopter that took him to a Charlotte hospital. His name had been unknown to firefighters and his status still could not be obtained as of late Sunday. An unconscious man was pulled from the burning bedroom of a Blacksburg home late Friday evening and subsequently flown by helicopter to a Charlotte hospital.

So fast was the response and flight to safety, emergency responders in Blacksburg were left over the weekend still wondering how the man fared. They never were able to get his name.

The fire on Wilbur Street in Blacksburg was one of two that broke out at almost the exact same time Friday evening, as members of Gaffney Fire Department battled a blaze on Evans Street, too. No injuries were reported in the Gaffney fire.

The Blacksburg man was discovered in the bedroom at 208 Wilbur St. by firefighter George Wilkins, according to firefighter Jimmy Johnson.

Wilkins was able to drag the man to the door of the smoke-filled bedroom, where Johnson, and firefighters J.B. Wilkins, Calvin Wilson and Mark Wilkins were able to carry him out of the home.

Suffering from an apparent case of severe smoke inhalation, the man was immediately transported by paramedics to a landing zone set up in a field near Interstate 85. A helicopter from Charlotte, which had already been in the air, immediately made its way to Blacksburg and took the man for treatment.

Neither firefighters nor the Blacksburg Police Department knew the fire victim's name. A woman who answered the telephone at the Charlotte Medical Center's nursing administration office said she couldn't track down the full name or status of a patient based on the limited information The Gaffney Ledger could provide her on Sunday afternoon.

While the medical status of the fire victim was unknown, Blacksburg Fire Chief Clay Greer credited his fast-acting men with getting the man out.

"If it wasn't for their act of bravery, it could have been a different story," he said.

The fire was contained to the bedroom of the home. A burned mattress was laying outside the home Sunday.

Greer said he did not make any determinations as to what sparked the fire.

The fire was noticed by a neighbor, who happened to walk outside and see flames in the bedroom window.

Greer offered special thanks to the CKC Volunteer Fire Department and Buffalo Volunteer Fire Department, which both assisted. CKC served as backup at the fire scene while Buffalo handled the helicopter landing zone.

In Gaffney, firefighters from all three city stations battled a blaze at 107 Evans St. on Friday night.

Fire Capt. Robert Grigg said the fire was contained to the living room of the singlestory home, though the residence sustained smoke and heat damage throughout.

Like the fire in Blacksburg, the fire on Evans Street was reported as a case of possible entrapment, but no one was inside the Evans Street home upon inspection, Grigg said.

Gaffney Fire Department was dispatched to Evans Street at 11:18 p.m. Friday and firefighters were able to declare the situation under control in approximately 30 minutes.

Grigg said the cause of the Evans Street fire had not been determined.
