Southern Exposure artists exhibit at Upstairs Artspace
"Going Fishing," a clay and copper piece by Cynthia Link of Gaffney, will be displayed in the Southern Exposure Exposed exhibit at the Upstairs Artspace in Tryon, N.C., beginning October 10. The Upstairs Artspace in Tryon, N.C., welcomes the Southern Exposure artists' group with the exhibit "Southern Exposure Exposed." These talented, mid-career artists from the Upstate of South Carolina have been together 30 years - meeting to talk about art, giving each other support, and often exhibiting together.
The two members of the group from Cherokee County - Cynthia Link and Sara Dame Setzer - are looking forward to their second showing with Southern Exposure this year.
The Upstairs show opens October 10 with a public reception on Saturday, Oct. 11, from 5-8 p.m.; closing date is November 15.
Participating artists are Carol Augthun, painting and mixed media; Jessica Barnes, painting; David Benson, mixed media (particularly chicken feathers); Amy Goldstein-Rice, ceramic sculpture; Claire Miller Hopkins, painting (pastel and oil); Linda Hudgins, painting,; Cynthia Link, jewelry and ceramic art; Mark Olencki, photography; Sara Dame Setzer, painting and printmaking; Doris Turner, mixed media; Ann Wenz, textile art; and David Zacharias, ceramic vessels.
In addition to the reception for the artists, several members will participate in a Walk and Talk Tour of art at the gallery on Sunday, Oct. 19, at 2 p,m.
According to Setzer, president of the organization, members will have approximately 10 minutes each to discuss their work and answer questions as they work their way around the exhibit. Upstairs Artspace director, Nancy Holmes, said that this event has been an educational and profitable undertaking for the gallery that is always highly anticipated.
Southern Exposure has planned, developed and implemented more than 30 exhibits for museums and galleries throughout the Southeast and in New York City. Some memorable exhibits have been The Horse Course, Art in a Box, The Art of Food, Red, The Home/The Homeless, and Black and White.
"Southern Exposure keeps us in touch with the local art scene and provides fellowship with other artists," said Linda Hudgins. "It also enables us to be in more shows than we could accomplish on our own."
The Upstairs is located at 49 S. Trade St., the main downtown street in Tryon; business hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
