Lady Saints golfers finish 14th in tourney

The Limestone College women's golf team carded a two-round score of 790 (410-380) to finish 14th in the Lenoir-Rhyne Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate. The tournament was held at the par-72, 5864-yard River Hills Golf Club.

Wingate University won the 15- team tournament with a final score of 638. Queens took second (652), and Montevallo was third (655).

Evi Sundquist was Limestone's top finisher as she carded 168 (79- 89) for 20th. Ansley Smith tied for 37th (85-91 176), Miranda Van Arsdale tied for 61st (107-82), and Mallary Long was 72nd (139-121 260). Rachael Hageman finished 73rd (143-118 261).

Limestone will compete in the Conference Carolinas Fall Preview on October 20-21. The tournament will be played at the Tillery Tradition Country Club in Mt. Gilead, N.C.

LC player earns POW honors

Limestone College's Mark Johnston was named Conference Carolinas Men's Soccer Player of the Week on Tuesday. Johnston's solid performance last week helped Limestone, now ranked No. 23 in the nation, to conference wins against Coker and Barton.

Johnston, a defender from Wellington, New Zealand, has helped Limestone's defense become one of the top in the conference, and he has also chipped in on the Saints attack.

He scored the game-winning goal in Limestone's 1-0 shutout against Coker last Wednesday, and also recorded a goal in the Saints' win against Barton on Saturday.

While starting in all 10 games this year, he has helped anchor a Saints defense that has only allowed their opponents 11 goals this season as the squad posts a 1.08 GAA. Limestone also has four shutouts this season.

Saints fall No. 20 Bobcats

Lees-McRae College defeated Limestone College 3-1 in Conference Carolinas men's soccer action on Tuesday night. The Bobcats, ranked No. 20 in the latest national poll, improve to 6-0 in the conference (11-2 overall), as the No. 23 Saints slip to 4-2-1 in the league (9-2-1 overall).

Limestone trailed 1-0 at the half. The Saints lone goal was scored by Tom Beattie off a direct kick opportunity.

Limestone had several scoring chances but couldn't find the back of the net.

The Saints head to Murfreesboro, N.C., to face Chowan University on October 11 at 3 p.m.

Carpentier out at Gillett Evernham

Patrick Carpentier was released from Gillett Evernham Motorsports on Tuesday, and Mike Wallace and AJ Allmendinger will finish the season in the No. 10 Dodge.

Carpentier was likely being let go at the end of this season, anyway. GEM had already hired Reed Sorenson to take over the car next season, and Carpentier's return was dependent on the team finding sponsorship for a fourth entry.

But his release was fast-tracked after Carpentier failed to qualify for last weekend's race at Talladega Superspeedway. Carpentier later wrote on his personal Web site that he argued after qualifying with team director Mike Shiplett, who blamed him for failing to qualifying in a dispute that several others witnessed.
