Former Gaffney High products lead teams to win
Florida A&M 21
Former Gaffney High product Malcolm Long completed 18 of 29 passes for 171 yards to help South Carolina State to a 28-21 win over Florida A&M.
He had two touchdown passes to receiver Oliver "Tre" Young to help S.C. State take a 21-0 lead in the first half.
Florida A&M stormed back with three touchdowns in the third quarter in an eight minute span, including two in nine seconds, to take a 21-20 lead. But Long had a crucial completion to Dustin Dubose for a first down that helped S.C. State run out the final 6:24 of the game after blocking a field goal attempt.
This season Long has completed 95 of 154 passes for 1,078 yards with seven touchdowns and six interceptions. He has carried the ball 25 times for 150 yards. His biggest plays have been a 79-yard pass and an 87-yard run.
Appalachian State 47,
The Citadel 21
Appalachian State center Brett Irvin (Gaffney) and his offensive line teammates led the Mountaineers to a 41-7 halftime lead. The offensive line played a key role in Appalachian gaining 363 yards in the first half.
Jarvis Littlejohn Quarterback Armanti Edwards, who overcame an ankle injury suffered in last Saturday's win over Presbyterian, highlighted ASU's first-half dominance by rushing 11 times for 79 yards and two touchdowns and completing 10-of-12 passes for 177 yards and three scoring passes before the break.
Edwards became only the 12th player in NCAA Division I history with 3,000 passing yards and 3,000 rushing yards in a career.
Appalachian State (3-2) continues SoCon play Saturday when it travels to play league-newcomer Samford at 3:30 p.m. in Birmingham, Ala.
Tusculum 48, Lenoir-Rhyne 19
Tusculum linebacker and former Gaffney High star Jarvis Littlejohn forced the fumble that lead to his team's first score Saturday in a 48-19 win over Lenior- Rhyne.
Littlejohn finished with three tackles.
Tusculum (4-2) returns home to host Brevard College Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
Charleston Southern 13,
Gardner-Webb 10
Tyson Petty Gaffney product Tyson Petty caught two passes, including a 64- yarder. Wide receiver Nick Melton, who played at Gaffney, finished with four catches for 45 yards.
For the season, Petty has 12 catches for 281 yards and is second on the team in all purpose yards with 446 yards. Melton has eight catches for 105 yards. Neither player has scored a touchdown this season.
Wofford College senior wide receiver Andy Strickland (Gaffney High School) and his Wofford teammates were off this weekend. Wofford returns home to play Chattanooga Saturday at 3 p.m.
Strickland is Wofford's leading receiver with 12 catches for 225 yards. He has carried the ball five times for 104 yards. He has three touchdowns.
In a related note, former Gaffney High product Bryce Smiley was named the Presbyterian College "Special Teams Player Of The Week" for his performance against Elon on Sept. 13.
