IT'S FLU SEASON
State health officials urge residents to get shots

      Like needles? Officials with the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) know for many the answer is "no." But with flu season beginning in a few weeks, the state health authority is encouraging residents of the Palmetto State to head to local clinics for their annual round of shots.

Constant arguing by parents concerns college student

      Dear Annie: I go to college far from home, so the little time I spend with my family is very precious to me. However, each time I come back there seems to be a larger and larger space between my parents, who have been married nearly 30 years. When I'm with Mom, she says excessively critical things about Dad. When I'm with Dad, he says disrespectful things about Mom.

ANNIVERSARY
Huskeys celebrate 65 years
      Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Huskey Sr. celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on Oct. 9, 2008. Mr. Huskey and the former Margaret Phillips were married in Gaffney before he left for active duty in the Navy during World War II. They have three children, Linda Richardson, Shelba Cook and Lewis Huskey Jr.

Israels celebrate 53rd anniversary
      Carroll and Edith Israel of Gaffney celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary on Oct. 8, 2008. Mr. and Mrs. Israel were married in 1955. They have a daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Sam Booker, and one granddaughter, Ashley.

1 in 4 US teen girls got cervical cancer shot

      ATLANTA— About one in four teen girls last year got the groundbreaking vaccine that prevents cervical cancer, federal health officials reported Thursday. The figures represent the government's first full year of vaccination rate data for the Gardasil vaccine, which came on the market in mid-2006. Merck & Co.

Guitarist Tom Fisch to perform at library's first fall music event
      The Blacksburg Public Library will host the first fall "Music Sandwiched-In" concert of 2008 on Thursday Oct. 16, from 12:15-1 p.m, featuring guitarist Tom Fisch. Fisch has written songs for the Oak Ridge Boys, James Taylor and Dan Fogleberg.

Practice GED to be held Saturday
      The Cherokee County Adult Education program will give the official practice GED on Saturday, Oct. 11. The practice test is used as an indicator on whether students can pass the national exam for a high school equivalency diploma.
