Blacksburg set to battle explosive Cavaliers
"Christ Church has a good ballclub." - Mickey Moss The Blacksburg Wildcats will try to extend their win streak to two, but it won't be easy.
Blacksburg opens region play today against undefeated Christ Church.
Christ Church is 7-0 and fresh off a 70-0 victory over Southside Christian on homecoming. The Cavaliers are averaging 46.6 points a game and only giving up 17.7 points a game.
Left tackle J.K. Jay (6'6, 275 pounds) is considered one of the top offensive tackles in the country. Jay, a Clemson committment, was recently selected to participate in the Under Armour All-American game in January in Orlando, Fla.
"Christ Church has a good ball club," Blacksburg coach Mickey Moss said. "They're a very polished offensive team with good skill players. They play well together."
Moss is impressed with the Christ Church quarterback, who directs the team's spread offense.
"He's very talented," Moss said. "He's a deceptive runner. He just doesn't make a lot of mistakes."
Moss said the Cavaliers will throw to many targets - and throw to them often.
"They will throw about 90 percent of the time," the Blacksburg coach said.
If the Cavaliers' doesn't get your attention, their defense will. Moss said the Cavaliers play similarly to Byrnes.
"They are just very aggressive," he said. "They will get into gaps and put pressure on you all night."
The Cavaliers' aggressive style is a double-edged sword. It also allows for teams to hit the big play.
"There are some opportunities to make plays," Moss said.
The Wildcats enter the game off a 35-12 victory over Dixie, a common opponent for the teams. Christ Church beat Dixie, 50-8, in week two of the season.
Against the Wildcats, Dixie controlled the football almost the entire game. The Wildcats had only three first downs and ran 24 plays in the game.
"Dixie was a power running team that ran the ball straight at us," Moss said. "They were able to convert in a lot of short yardage situations on third and fourth down to keep our defense on the field."
Blacksburg got big plays on offense, defense and special teams to earn the victory.
Josh Elmore ran for a 63- yard touchdown run and threw a 55-yard touchdown pass to Chris Hames. Chase Hames, Chris's brother, returned a blocked field goal attempt by Ryan Green for an 87-yard touchdown.
Brandon Wilson had a 49- yard run to set up the Wildcats final score.
"That win meant everything to us," Moss said.
