'Stick Elliott Memorial' to benefit MOW For 24 years, the Stick Elliot Memorial Race has been an event looked forward to by fans at Cherokee Speedway. But the annual race is taking on extra importance this year as proceeds from the event are going toward a good cause. Meals on Wheels, which provides hot meals to disabled and elderly residents in the area, will be the beneficiary of the popular race. This is the first time the popular "dirt track" has hosted an event on the local group's behalf. Speedway director Lennie Buff approached Meals on Wheels officials about the possibility of donating funds to the organization. "They came to us about a year ago through mutual friends about possibly helping out," said Cherokee County Meals on Wheels Director Terry Dennis. "We talked about it and were able to work things out. It's definitely an answer to a prayer." More than 400 people are provided hot meals and other services by the organization each day. The cost to feed each person is $15 a week, equalling $770 a year per recipient. The local Meals on Wheels chapter receives no public funding, relying entirely on donations and fundraisers to maintain its operations. Dennis said it takes the help of the Cherokee Speedway and other donors to continue serving clients. "For someone to say they want to help, they are meeting the need," Dennis said. "It gives us an opportunity to give back." In addition to a night of racing, fans will get the opportunity to meet drivers and earn prizes. Meals on Wheels officials will also be on hand to answer questions from people who might want to sign up relatives for services or volunteer to help out. Gates open at 5 p.m., with racing action expected to begin shortly after 7 p.m. For more information, call Meals on Wheels at 487-2730, or the Cherokee Speedway at 489-1969. |
