Ex-Indians lead college teams to victories

Wofford and Chattanooga were tied at 7 in the second quarter, but the Terriers scored three touchdowns to take a 28-7 halftime lead.

Senior wide receiver Andy Strickland (Gaffney) caught a 50 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ben Widmeyer on the first possession of the third quarter. Wofford's reserves finished out the game as the Terriers improve to 4-1 this season.

Wofford hosts Western Carolina Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in Spartanburg.

Appalachian State 35,

Samford 24 No. 2 Appalachian State fell behind 14-7 in the first quarter but overcame the slow start to improve to 2-0 in the conference.

Appalachian turned the ball over twice in the first quarter. Samford used a full bag of tricks with an onside kick attempt, direct snap to the halfback, halfback pass to the quarterback, and even a fake field goal.

The damage could have been worse as a fumbled kickoff return gave the Bulldogs possession at the ASU 24 late in the opening quarter.

Jarvis Littlejohn Jarvis Littlejohn The Mountainers' Cortez Gilbert blocked a 32-yard Samford field goal attempt on the third play of the second quarter to keep the deficit to one touchdown.

The second quarter was all Appalachian State for starting center Brett Irvin (Gaffney) and the Mountaineers offense.

Quarterback Armanti Edward directed scoring drives of 78, 67 and 52 yards while the defense limited Samford to 16 yards to take a 28-14 halftime lead.

Appalachian State closes out its only two game road trip this season when it travels Saturday to play Southern Conference rival Georgia Southern.

Former Gaffney linebacker J.B. Shippy is a freshman linebacker for Georgia Southern. Shippy and the Eagles were off this week. The game starts at 3 p.m. and will be televised on SportSouth across the Southeast.

Tusculum 55,

Brevard 42 Former Gaffney linebacker Jarvis Littlejohn had a solo tackle and eight assists as the Tusculum Pioneers defeated Brevard in a conference game.

Tusculum tied a school record with five fumble recoveries, which turned into three scores. Two of those touchdowns came in the opening period as Tusculum led 28-7 after the first quarter.

Malcolm Long Malcolm Long S.C. State 24,

Norfolk State 23 Sophomore quarterback Malcolm Long (Gaffney) went 15-27 in the air for 189 yards to help the Bulldogs (5-2) remain undefeated in league play.

All-MEAC junior running back Will Ford rushed for 179 yards on 18 carries. S.C. State tied the game at 7 on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Long to senior wide receiver Oliver "Trey" Young.

Linebacker Julius Wilkerson (Gaffney) assisted on three tackles for the Bulldogs.

S.C. State is off this week and returns to action Oct. 25 for a home game against conference leader Hampton University. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
