Habitat for Humanity helps make dreams come true

      Audrey Silver always wanted a home with a spacious back yard and her own parking spot. Silver and her son Reginald saw this dream come true in August when they were allowed to move into a home on the new street, Hope Acres Drive. It was one of five houses dedicated Sunday afternoon by Habitat for Humanity in a neighborhood called Hope Acres.

Grievance hearing rescheduled
      The two fired Veterans Affairs Office clerks will have to wait a little longer before pleading their case before the county's grievance committee. The hearing date for Kathy Love and Michele Tucker has been postponed from Thursday, Oct. 23, to Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 10 a.m., according to Cherokee County Interim Administrator Ben Clary.

Consumer Affairs representative will be at Gaffney library Oct. 23
      The South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs (SCDCA) will visit the Gaffney community Thursday, Oct. 23, to handle consumer complaints and questions. Regional SCDCA outreach coordinator Patty Guthrie will be at the Cherokee County Public Library, 300 E. Rutledge Ave. Consumers may come with questions or complaints regarding a business between 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

Students proceeding with plan to restore observatory

      An orange hunter's moon on the evening of Oct. 14 became the latest wonder in the sky that sent amateur astronomers to their telescopes. Catawba Valley Astronomy Club member Dr. Jon Kavanaugh has learned a telescope isn't always necessary for star gazing.

POLICE REPORT
      The Gaffney Police Department is investigating an Oct. 15 incident during which a worker at a West Floyd Baker Boulevard restaurant found a customer's lost purse but apparently decided to keep it. According to a police report, the purse owner, a 23-year-old Spartanburg woman, had been in the restaurant Oct.

District scores compare favorably

      Test scores and graduation data show the Cherokee County School District compares favorably with its education neighbors. Blacksburg High School's 84.7 percent graduation rate placed it among the top 15 percent in the state. Blacksburg and Gaffney High are two of the seven region high schools that met Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) under No Child Left Behind this year.

Manager arrested
      A manager for a local payday lender was arrested by the Gaffney Police Department this week on charges he cashed more than $27,000 in checks drawn on closed accounts. Bradford Charles Benton, 33, of 1st Avenue, was charged with two counts of breach of trust and 12 counts of forgery, according to arrest warrants at the Gaffney Police Department.

New home starts down

      The local housing market didn't catch a break in September. Home starts dropped from 13 in September 2007 to six last month, according to a monthly report issued by the Home Builders Association of Cherokee County. But there was better news concerning the cost of those houses as prices rose a whopping $55,000, from $96,000 in September 2007 to $151,000 last month.
