We appreciate everyone who has taken the time to take a photograph during their travels and submit it for publication. We will make every effort to see that every photo we receive appears in the newspaper.

To help assure your photograph reproduces at the highest possible quality, we offer these tips to keep in mind before snapping the shutter:

1. Avoid using cell phone cameras. That 1.5- or 2-megapixel image might look good on a tiny screen but becomes very distorted and grainy when enlarged for newspaper reproduction purposes.

2. Always check to see where the sun is before taking the photo. It's important to have the sunlight behind the photographer to eliminate shadows.

And speaking of shadows, try to avoid taking photographs under an awning, gazebo, outdoor porch or any other location where a covering will make the area dark. If you can't avoid this type of scenario, don't be afraid to use a flash to "fill" the area being photographed.

Photos submitted at 200 or 300 dpi (dots per inch) will always reproduce better than those sent at, say, 72 or 90 dpi. An in-focus jpg at 200 dpi usually works out very well.
