Kiwanians gearing up for pancake supper at new location Pancakes anyone? Local Kiwanis Club members hope the answer is 'yes' on Friday as the group hosts its annual pancake supper. Being held the same night as Gaffney High's final regular season football game, the event has become an event local residents look forward to. "This has been a great event for us," said Kiwanis member Don Ross. "It has helped us raise a lot of funds for the organizations we help." For the past 45 years, the supper has been held at the Gaffney Middle School cafeteria, a stone's throw from W.K. Brumbach Stadium. With the Indians' move across town to its new on-campus facility, changes were also in store for the Kiwanians' main fundraising effort. "It's the first year at a new school, so there are going to be some adjustments that have to be made," Ross said. "But hopefully we will continue to see hundreds of people waiting for pancakes. "(Parking) is a potential concern," Ross said. "There are so many different lots; one for faculty, another for buses and so on, it's just different." With parking at a premium, Kiwanis has ordered more take-out boxes than in previous years, expecting more people to choose to eat and run. "Those concerned will likely do take-out," Ross said. "But we know with added entrances that we didn't have at the other school, there will still be a lot of people here expecting some good food." A pleasant surprise for Ross and his fellow Kiwanians was the amount of space in the Gaffney High cafeteria. Equipped with modern technology that would make cooks on the Food Network envious, the organization is ready to see how effectively things run with more room to work. "I walked through and was surprised at how large the cafeteria was," Ross said. "We are more used to the small space found at (Gaffney Middle School). But definitely we are glad that Gaffney High officials gave us the opportunity to use their things." The group will be getting help from the Sub-Deb Club, Harbor of Hope and other organizations. Proceeds from the event will go to help children in several organizations, including the Salvation Army, the Boys and Girls Club, PeachCenter Ministries and others. "We try to spread the wealth among them," Ross said. "Our goal is to make sure they are helped in the best way possible." The pancake supper will run Friday Oct. 31 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased from any Kiwanis Club member. |
