'Trick-or-Treat on Main' set for Nov. 1 in Blacksburg

By JOE L. HUGHES II Ledger Staff Writer joe@gaffneyledger.com

Streets go empty and not a sound can be heard for miles through Cherokee County on Friday nights during the fall, with area football stadiums full of fans hoping to will their team to victory.

Similar to Friday nights, Halloween has become a tradition at many households, allowing children to get into costume and go from door to door looking for a tasty treat.

But with football and Oct. 31 falling on the same night this year, it has created a dilemma for some families in the area.

However, youths in Blacksburg will have multiple opportunities to don their favorite Halloween costume this year. Town resident Allyson Herndon has planned a "Trick-or-Treat on Main" event scheduled for Nov. 1.

Herndon brought plans for the event before Blacksburg Town Council last week. With Blacksburg High School's final regular season home game of the year and senior night taking place Oct. 31, there was a possibility that many children would not be able to trick-or-treat this year.

Herndon's plan will give everyone the chance to have their cake and eat it too.

"I don't have a business downtown or anything, and there is nothing for me to gain out of this. But we all want to help our kids have a good time," she said. "It gives kids the chance to trick-or-treat, and then gives our businesses the exposure they want."

Herndon said she has already enlisted the help of several businesses located in downtown Blacksburg to distribute candy to trick-ortreaters.

Blacksburg Mayor David Hogue believes the longtime resident's idea is good for the town.

"It's good when people want to do things for the town," Hogue said. "Any activity on the town sounds good. But especially when we get the chance to see our neighbors and enjoy each other."

"Trick-or-Treat on Main" will take place Nov. 1, and is expected to run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
