Former Gaffney High stars lead teams to big wins

Malcolm Long Malcolm Long S.C. State 35, Hampton 13

South Carolina State showed why they were picked the preseason favorites to win the conference championship by posting an impressive 35-13 victory over top-ranked Hampton to move into first place in the conference Saturday.

Starting quarterback Malcolm Long of Gaffney was 14 of 28 passing for 115 yards, while running back Travil Jamison rushed for 151 yards and scored four touchdowns.

All conference running back Will Ford had 182 yards on 25 carries in the victory.

S.C. State improved to 6-2 overall and 4-0 in the MEAC conference.

S.C. State will travel to Dover, DE Saturday to face Delaware State in a pivotal MEAC showdown. The game will be televised on ESPNU. Wofford College 55, Elon 20

Former Gaffney High standout Andy Strickland had a huge game with six catches for 101 yards, including a 59-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ben Widmeyer.

Strickland recorded his first career 100-yard receiving game. He was first wide receiver to top the century mark for Wofford since Shiel Wood accomplished the feat against Gardner-Webb on November 19, 2005.

The Appalachian State defense forced four turnovers to deliver coach Jerry Moore his 200th career victory. The second ranked Mountaineers needed the steller defensive plays to overcome a sluggish performance offensively.

Appalachian State was outgained 354-319 yards and held a 13-7 advantage until Furman scored 40 seconds into the fourth quarter.

Appalachian State quarterback Armanti Edwards threw touchdown passes in the fourth quarter to tight end Ben Jorden and T.J. Courman.

Appalachian State's win sets the stage for an important matchup Friday night with two former Gaffney football players in prominent roles. Former Gaffney High offensive lineman Kevin Brockman and defensive lineman Lavar Ross are among many freshmen from South Carolina starting their college play ing careers with Feather Ridge in Quincy, Calif.

After starting 0-2, the Feather River College football team has won four games in a row. Tusculum 45, Newberry 33

Corey Russell rushed for a pair of touchdowns and threw for two more to lead Tusculum College to a homecoming win over Newberry College Saturday afternoon.

Senior linebacker Jarvis Littlejohn, a Gaffney product, had seven tackles and a tackle for loss for Tusculum. Gardner-Webb 34, Virginia Military 27

Former Gaffney High player Nick Melton caught three passes for 28 yards. Tyson Petty, another GHS alum, did not have a catch. Petty did return three kickoffs for 61 yards, including one return for 33 yards.

Gardner-Webb will now play at Stony Brook on Saturday, Nov. 1, at 3 p.m.
