Tractor-trailer collision creates environmental mess at Hyatt Street truck stop
      Heavy rains on Friday morning combined with a runaway tractor-trailer to create a small environmental mess behind a Hyatt Street truck stop. A tractor-trailer that had parked in the Pilot Truck Stop at about midday on Friday apparently got away from its driver and rolled across the large lot into another parked tractor-trailer at the rear of the property.

Kiwanians gearing up for pancake supper at new location
      Pancakes anyone? Local Kiwanis Club members hope the answer is 'yes' on Friday as the group hosts its annual pancake supper. Being held the same night as Gaffney High's final regular season football game, the event has become an event local residents look forward to.

City proceeding with shelter upgrade
      The City of Gaffney is wasting no time in honoring its pledge to upgrade the animal shelter. Gaffney Administrator James Taylor said the city is completing a survey of the property and has begun a preliminary evaluation of the shelter building in hopes of beginning construction on a new addition in a couple of weeks.

Drive 'em home, boys
      In another sign the gas shortage is easing, the county last week lifted its order for county officials to park their take-home county-owned vehicles. County officials instituted the restriction in mid-September when supplies of gas and diesel dwindled in the aftermath of hurricanes that damaged the refineries located near the Gulf of Mexico.

Judge allows DNA test in Riddle case
      Before accused murderer Ernest Riddle's retrial is held, at least one piece of evidence will be sent for a new type of DNA testing, the presiding judge ruled in an order handed down earlier this week. Riddle is accused of murder in the August 1985 stabbing death of Abbie Sue Mullinax inside her home at 205 Concord Ave.

POLICE REPORT
      The Gaffney Police Department is investigating the armed robbery of a man at Limestone Courts on North Limestone Street on Oct. 23. According to a police report, a 42-year-old man was approached by three subjects who pulled a gun on him and fired a shot into the air before hitting him about the face. The man sustained a swollen eye and busted lip during the assault.

      Visitors to the Cherokee County Courthouse will see much more than a fresh coat of paint and new flooring inside the Family Court offices. They'll also see a lot more security.

      Hey, convenience store owners deserve a tax break, too. That's the sentiment of Gaffney City Councilman Bernard Smith who has proposed to slice in half the business license fees the city charges owners of stores that sell gasoline and alcoholic beverages.

      When the lights are brightest, professional wrestler Elix Skipper puts on his best show. The former World Championship Wrestling (WCW) and Total Nonstop Action (TNA) Wrestling superstar has won several championships during his many years inside the ring. But the longtime grappler has not performed in front of a Cherokee County audience.

Students are dialing for credit...and dollars!
      Extra credit can be a powerful incentive, especially when it can help a teacher get more supplies for their classroom. Grassy Pond Elementary teacher Charlene Key awarded 300 extra credit points in September to eight students in her gifted and talented classes. The students earned the additional points by correctly answering science questions.

'Trick-or-Treat on Main' set for Nov. 1 in Blacksburg
      Streets go empty and not a sound can be heard for miles through Cherokee County on Friday nights during the fall, with area football stadiums full of fans hoping to will their team to victory. Similar to Friday nights, Halloween has become a tradition at many households, allowing children to get into costume and go from door to door looking for a tasty treat.

      Any wreck on Interstate 85 through Gaffney is likely to generate double the emergency response thanks to a trial program being run by members of the Gaffney Fire Department and the Grassy Pond Volunteer Fire Department.

Man arrested for purse snatching
      The Gaffney Police Department served two arrest warrants against a West Robinson Street man accused of snatching two purses from two women inside a North Limestone Street restaurant. According to a police report, a witness saw Charles L. Harris Jr., 34, sitting in a corner of Harold's Game Room at about 9:15 p.m. Oct. 18.
