Sorority has second meeting of 2008-2009 year Oct. 6

Xi Alpha Delta Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi held its second meeting of the 2008-2009 year on Monday, Oct. 6, at 7 p.m. at Trackside Diner. Shirley Turner was the hostess.

The president, Patty Greene, called the meeting to order and Shirley Addis led the opening ritual. The secretary, Ruth Ann Ohlsen, gave the roll call and 14 members were present to answer with the Greek alphabet. The secretary also read minutes from the September meeting which were approved.

The president asked for reports from the executive officers . Libby Reed, vice president and chairman of membership, reported on a prospective member. The treasurer reported the balance in the treasure as of October 6 and presented a new budget for the new year.

Greene asked for reports from each committee. Ways and means will continue to find ways to fund the group's projects for year. The service project for October was a donation to the Alzheimer's Walk that was held Oct. 11. Programs were selected by the members for future meetings. Pictures and other items were collected for the scrapbook and the group will continue to update the yearbook. The bylaws were discussed and the telephone committee will be changing the member calling procedure. Publicity showed some writeups in the newspapers and the history committee will continue compile information on the sorority and past presidents.

The social for October was on Tuesday, Oct. 28, at TLC/Gaffney First Baptist Church.

Margaret Smith will be the sorority's Valentine Sweetheart for 2008-2009. A picture and a write up about her will be turned into Beta Sigma Phi International by November 1.

Barbara Vassey presented a program on hobbies. Buying and reading books for children and adults is one of her favorite hobbies. She presented the sorority three Halloween books for children - "Halloween Tree" by Bradbury, "Teacher's Night Before Halloween" by Steven L. Layne and the well-known "Spider and the Fly" by Tony Ditelizzi, which was the book she chose to read and show pictures from.

The Xi Alpha Delta poster representing the sorority's theme for the year, "Rekindle the Torch of Friendship," will be displayed at the next meeting Monday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m. at the home of Hazel Abernathy. Shirley Addis will be the co-hostess.
