Gaffney Middle School students Jorden Fernanders and Xavier Foster cast their votes Tuesday in a mock presidential election. Gaffney Middle School received the type of voter participation Tuesday rarely seen in real elections.

The school had a 93 percent voter turnout from students and teachers for a mock presidential election.

Democratic Party candidate Barack Obama received 55 percent of the votes while Republican John McCain received 44 percent. The remaining one percent was split among independent presidential hopefuls.

"All of our students were issued a Gaffney Middle voter registration card," Gaffney Middle teacher Judy Robinson said Tuesday. "If a student didn't bring their card today, they didn't get to vote."

The mock election has been a regular activity for Gaffney Middle students since the 2000 presidential race.

There were three referendum on the school's election ballot. Students were asked their opinions on Daylight Savings Time, a 4-day school week, and whether students should wear school uniforms.

Election results showed 81 percent of students want to continue Daylight Savings Time. Sixty-seven percent of students would be willing to attend school for an extra hour each day if the district went to a 4-day school week and only 23 percent like the idea of wearing a school uniform.

The students could have influenced how one magazine covered the presidential election this month.

"Our students spend several weeks studying the election process. One of the things they learned is there are 13 political parties with presidential candidates," Robinson said. "Our students wrote letters to ABC News, Junior Scholastic magazine and ABC News to see why they don't provide more coverage on independent parties."

Robinson received a copy of the new Junior Scholastic magazine issue Tuesday. The magazine included a lengthy article about independent political party presidential candidates Bob Barr (Libertarian Party), Cynthia McKinney (Green Party) and Chuck Baldwin (Constitution Party.)
