Business closure leads employees to strike out on their own
PinPoint Graphic Studio design consultants Jim Johnson (left) and business partner David Callahan put the finishing touches on a project. For graphic designers Jim Johnson and David Callahan, Progressive Screen Engravers (PSE) almost felt like home.
So when the design and apparel business closed earlier this month, both men found themselves unemployed.
But not for long.
The graphic designers have started their own business, PinPoint Graphic Studio, which specializes in logo and business card design, page layout, web graphics and other services.
Now the partners can do much of their work from home.
"We can do everything except for the printing, with most of the work being done on our computers at home," said PinPoint Graphic Studios co-owner David Callahan. "Right now, it feels a bit like freelancing. But we're an actual company."
The partners obtained a retail license for the business last week.
During the past few years, PSE became a popular spot for Gaffney High students and fans to pick up apparel and other items to show their school pride. The business also catered to the needs of local schools, churches and other organizations.
"(PSE) had a good customer base," Johnson said. "Limestone College and many schools and churches in the area were repeat customers."
Callahan and Johnson provided much of the artwork for items sold at PSE. With much of their work being worn by local residents, they are confident things will not be much different.
"It's great to see as many people wearing stuff that we designed," Callahan said. "We wouldn't be making the product if people didn't like it. Hopefully, they will continue to like the work we are doing."
While most of the duo's work has been getting their business on its feet, they are ready to pick up the pace.
"We don't want former customers to forget about us," Callahan said. "With so much business going to Spartanburg and beyond, our goal is to let people know there is someone in town who knows how to best handle your graphic design needs."
