Wildcats still have a chance for playoffs with win today
"They have some good looking kids who run the spread offense." - Mickey Moss Blacksburg coach Mickey Moss isn't kidding when he says the 1-8 Wildcats have a chance to make the playoffs.
Although the Wildcats need some help to qualify for the playoffs under the point system, that help will be immaterial if the Wildcats don't beat 1-8 Southside Christian today.
But that's not a given, according to Moss.
"They have some good looking kids who run the spread offense," the Blacksburg coach said. "They only have a few seniors, so they have a look of a team who might be pretty good."
The Wildcats could claim the eighth and final seed in the Class A upperstate bracket with a victory over Southside Christian and a win by Walhalla.
That may be enough to give the Wildcats a playoff spot under the points system.
But Moss said the Wildcats must play better than they did against Landrum to have any hope of making the playoffs.
"It was a very disappointing loss," Moss said. "We made far too many mistakes and we didn't tackle very well."
"We are still going through some growing pains and the players are adjusting to a new way of doing things. It's just going to take time," Moss added. "We are getting there and working just like any other week."
Southside Christian has lost its last two games to Ware Shoals and Landrum by a combined score of 96-14.
Southside Christian's only win was over Jefferson, 30-0.
The Sabres are averaging only 11.7 points a game on offense and giving up an average of 38 points a game on defense.
The Wildcats have similar stats, giving up 34 points a game on offense and scoring at a 10 point a game clip.
The Sabres are led on offense by quarterback Will Gladden.
"He's a good quarterback," Moss said.
Travis Morgan is the team's leading rusher, while Chandler Bachman alternates at running back and wide receiver.
On defense, Southside Christian employs a 4-4 scheme.
Moss said the Wildcats must avoid turnovers, tackle well and execute on offense to defeat Southside Christian.
"There is no quick fix," Moss said.
