Candidates address issues at Grassy Pond stump meeting
      The 30th anniversary of the creation of the Grassy Pond Volunteer Fire Department was cause to celebrate Saturday, but not cause to attend the department's traditional stump meeting. A smaller-than-normal crowd of about 40 people attended the stump meeting, which featured only six candidates or their representatives.

Lawsuit filed
      A mother and daughter have filed civil lawsuits against a Gaffney business for what they claim are injuries they sustained in an assault they contend could have been prevented. According to two separate lawsuits filed in the Cherokee County Courthouse, Sylvia Christy Humprhries arrived for work Sept. 2 at Cathuplas Inc.

Legal battle keeps planned cancer treatment center on hold
      Cherokee County cancer patients could some day benefit from a medical project that has been tied up in the court system for the past six years. The Spartanburg Regional Heathcare System (SRHS), the parent company of Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, and Cancer Centers of the Carolinas (CCC) are involved in a court dispute over the placement of a linear accelerator.

      Rarely do musicians hold their voice on anything. So it should come as no surprise that the music industry is making sure that everyone at least 18 years of age make their way to local polling stations to vote. ARC offers three first aid classes
      The American Red Cross Cherokee County Service Center will conduct an Adult CPR and Standard First Aid Nov. 3 from 6-10 p.m. An Infant and Child CPR class will be held Tuesday, Nov. 4, from 6-10 p.m. and a Dog First Aid class is planned Tuesday, Nov, 11, 9 a.m.- noon. Each course has a fee.

Victim's family forgives man accused of murder
      Family members of a Clover man killed by a shotgun blast to the head inside a Blacksburg home did something unusual Wednesday during a bond hearing for the man accused of pulling the trigger. Authorities contend Woodrow Hayes, 28, of Wilderness Trail, is responsible for the Sept. 24 death of Benjamin Eric Phillips, of Highway 161 in Clover.

Mobile home destroyed by fire
      Firefighters from three local departments rushed to a working fire on Park Place Road off Whelchel Road late Thursday but were unable to save a mobile home. Heavy smoke and flames greeted firefighters upon their arrival and it was initially unclear if anyone was inside based on emergency calls from neighbors.

Boys and Girls club damaged by gunshots
      The Boys and Girls Club on Pecan Street in Gaffney sustained at least $500 in damage over the weekend when it was discovered that someone had fired a gunshot through its front door. According to a report at the Gaffney Police Department, the bullet broke the glass in the front door to the building and lodged in a wall near the front desk.

Five recent GHS grads named AP Scholars
      Valedictorian Madison McCraw was among five recent Gaffney High graduates named AP Scholars for their exceptional achievement on college exams. The College Board annually recognizes students who pass multiple Advanced Placement exams for college credit. About 18 percent of the world's 1.6 million high school students scored well enough to be named AP Scholars this year.

Fire called suspicious
      A suspicious fire leveled a vacant mobile home behind a Wood Street property late Wednesday. Gaffney Fire Chief Nathan Ellis said firefighters found the trailer, which was located in a densely vegetated area behind 313 Wood Street, fully engulfed in flames upon their arrival.
