The Boys and Girls Club on Pecan Street in Gaffney sustained at least $500 in damage over the weekend when it was discovered that someone had fired a gunshot through its front door.

According to a report at the Gaffney Police Department, the bullet broke the glass in the front door to the building and lodged in a wall near the front desk.

The incident likely happened between 7 p.m. Oct. 24 and 7 a.m. Oct. 25, when it was discovered, though police were able to learn from Cherokee County E-911 dispatchers that a caller from Willow Street — roughly two blocks away from the Boys and Girls Club — had reported the sound of gunfire at about 11:30 p.m. Oct. 24.

Vance Hammond, area director for the Boys and Girls Club, could not be reached for immediate comment Tuesday afternoon.

The damage at the Boys and Girls Club is just the latest in an ongoing string of crimes targeting nonprofit groups and churches.

A Wilkinsville Highway church van sustained gunshot damage the weekend before, and both the Salvation Army and the Broad River Baptist Association were the victims of theft in preceding weeks. Someone cut the catalytic converters from Salvation Army buses used for after-school programs, while someone stole and subsequently wrecked a disaster relief trailer owned by the Baptist Association.

All of the events occurred within Gaffney City limits.
