Fire called suspicious

By TIM GULLA Ledger Staff Writer tim@gaffneyledger.com

A suspicious fire leveled a vacant mobile home behind a Wood Street property late Wednesday.

Gaffney Fire Chief Nathan Ellis said firefighters found the trailer, which was located in a densely vegetated area behind 313 Wood Street, fully engulfed in flames upon their arrival.

The trailer had been vacant and was not serviced by utilities, Ellis said, though it appeared people had been using the trailer due to the level of trash and other items found.

"A lot of the neighbors told me they didn't even know (the trailer) was there," Ellis said.

The owner of the property, Vertie Hollis, told firefighters she bought the property 10 years ago and that no one has ever resided in the trailer during that time.

Ellis said the cause of the fire is undetermined so it's unclear if the fire was accidental or intentionally set.

The Gaffney Police Department recorded it as a suspicious fire.

All three fire stations from the city — headquarters, Overbrook and East Gaffney — responded to the blaze. Due to the intensity of the fire and amount of damage that already had taken place by the time of their arrival, Ellis said firefighters worked to contain and extinguish the fire from the building's exterior and made no entry to battle the blaze from the interior.
