Blacksburg draws top seed in playoffs
"This gives us another week of practice." - Mickey Moss Blacksburg plays Calhoun County Friday in the first round of the Class A playoffs.
Blacksburg (2-8) will travel to play an undefeated Calhoun County team Friday at 7:30 p.m. in St. Matthews, S.C. The two teams were paired in the Class A Division I in a playoff schedule set over the weekend by the S.C. High School League.
Blacksburg qualified for the playoffs with an impressive 49-24 win over Southside Christian on Friday. This gives a young Wildcats team their first taste of the postseason under first year coach Mickey Moss.
"We are looking forward to it," Moss said. "This gives another week of practice. I'm glad our younger players will get a chance to experience the playoffs. This is what we have worked for all season."
Calhoun County has exactly the type football program that Moss plans to build at his alma mater. Blacksburg's first round opponent has been an annual contender for the state championship over the past three years, winning the state title in 2005.
Calhoun County was eliminated in the playoffs in 2006 and 2007 by Chesterfield, which played for the state title both seasons.
Calhoun County (10-0) is led offensively by Shrine Bowl wide receiver Alshon Jeffrey and quarterback David Sims. Jeffrey has been committed to Southern Cal since last summer.
Sims, a Kentucky commitment, will play in the North South All-Star in December.
Junior defensive back David Watson leads a defense that has shut out three of its past four opponents. Watson is the younger brother of Tennesee cornerback DeAngelo Willingham.
Moss hasn't played against Calhoun County since he was the head coach of Saluda in 1986. Calhoun was led that year by defensive end Chris Rumph, a former USC defensive end and current defensive line coach at Clemson.
"Calhoun County has a lot of really good athletes," Moss said. "We are excited to go to the playoffs. We were willing to play anywhere for the playoffs this week, even if it meant we had to travel to the North Pole."
