Former teacher at Central Elementary School
LAVONIA, Ga. - Shirley DeLane Swofford Parker, 77, of Lavonia, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008, at her home. In 1992, she retired from a 35-year teaching career, which included Central Elementary School in Gaffney and Lavonia Elementary School in Lavonia, Ga. She was an active member of Lavonia First Baptist Church. She was an avid golfer, gardner and birdwatcher. Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Charles Russell Parker Sr.; two daughters, DeLane Haren (Evan) of Etowah, Tenn., and Lola Bell (Steve) of Athens, Ga.; a son, Rusty Parker (Sherri) of Simpsonville, S.C.; eight grandchildren, Frank, Adrienne DeLane and Parker Haren; David and Susan DeLane Bell and Russell, Van and Andrew Parker. Survivors in Gaffney include her nephew and his wife, Mike and Rita Swofford, three great-nieces, one great-nephew and numerous cousins. Mrs. Parker was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Lola Clary Swofford; her brother, James Edward Swofford; and her niece, Pat Swofford Harrington. The family will receive friends Thursday, Nov. 6, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Strickland Funeral Home, Lavonia. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at Lavonia First Baptist Church, followed by a graveside services at Lavonia City Cemetery.
