Former Gaffney High products lead teams to win
Deleware State 17 Former Gaffney High product Malcolm Long completed 18 of 30 passes for 246 yards in the win. The Bulldogs got a late last-minute stand from its defense to overcome two secondhalf turnovers and an overall lackluster performance to remain perfect in the Mid-Eastern conference.
Appalachian State 70,
Wofford 24
Appalachian State scored on their first six possessions to take a 42-14 lead at halftime. Center Brett Irvin, a Gaffney High product, and the Appalachian State offensive line paved the way for a stellar night for the Mountaineers offense.
Quarterback Armanti Edwards had a career night with a schoolrecord five touchdown passes and a rushing touchdown for Appalachian State. Overall, the Mountaineers offense finished the night with 620 yards.
Wofford senior wide receiver Andy Strickland had three catches for 47 yards. Strickland helped set up the Terriers first touchdown when he caught a 33-yard pass down the far sideline for a first down. Halloween night was not kind for Wofford, which had five turnovers in the game.
Jarvis Littlejohn Feather Ridge 19,
Sacramento Community College 8
Former Gaffney defensive lineman Lavar Ross and offensive lineman Kevin Brockman both had big games to help Feather Ridge improve to 6-3 this season.
Brockman had five knockdown blocks. Ross blocked a field goal and had two tackles, including a tackle for loss. He had one quarterback hurry against Sacramento.
Brockman had seven knockdown blocks in last weekend's win over American River College. Ross had three tackles, a sack and tackle for loss.
Tusculum 33,
Mars Hill 28 Linebacker Jarvis Littlejohn had seven tackles and a pass breakup. Littlejohn, a Gaffney product, was among 18 senior players recognized before the game. Tusculum will host Carson- Newman College Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
Gardner Webb 34,
Stony Brook 33
Gardner-Webb receiver Tyson Petty (Gaffney) made a circus 33- yard catch on the 1-yard line with less than a minute to go before halftime. The play set up a short touchdown by running back Philip Peoples to trim Stony Brook's lead to 26-21 at halftime.
Tyson Petty Both teams were held scoreless through much of the third quarter.
Gardner-Webb lined up for a field goal but faked the attempt. Holder Nick Melton (Gaffney) threw a touchdown pass on the fake field goal, apparently giving the Bulldogs their first lead.
After initially signaling the score, the officiating crew met for several minutes and overturned the initial call in favor of a 15-yard illegal substitution penalty.
The overturned touchdown call seemed to fire up Gardner-Webb. The Bulldogs went on a seven play 73-yard scoring drive on their next possession and then turned a fumbled kickoff into the go-ahead touchdown with 8:35 left on the clock.
Petty had two catches for 45 yards while Melton had one catch for seven yards.
