Feels sales tax hike was a bad idea

Dear Editor:

I do not believe the increase in sales tax in Cherokee County was a good thing. The people who disagree with me are the ones who are profiting from the property tax cuts.

When you look at property tax, it links to the school system. Our schools are funded by our property taxes and a decrease in tax is a decrease in funds towards the schools.

Some people believe the 1 percent sales tax specifically for the schools is sufficient to balance the loss of funds from the tax cuts, but looking at the state the economy influences me to think otherwise.

People are turning away from buying wants to only buying the necessities, which largely consists of food, which has no tax at all. In order to gain from a sales tax, consumers actually have to buy products. Therefore, if people are buying less, the revenue from the tax is decreasing, also.

Not only are we losing school funding from these property tax cuts, but we are not gaining enough revenue from consumer purchases to balance it out. Jessica Shippy Pacolet, S.C.
