Indians knocked

off the air

Because of a conflict with Furman University basketball on WOLT 103.3 FM Friday night, the Gaffney Indians' first-round playoff game with the Summerville Green Wave will air only over the internet stream and through the telephone dial up service, FBC Sports president Dennis Fowler said Wednesday.

"It is not a situation that we like but one we have to deal with it. Unlike the days when the games aired on our own WAGI 105.3 FM, we have no control over air time availability after the Furman contact with WOLT begins," Fowler said. "The Furman broadcast takes priority over the FBC contract for Gaffney football because it was in place first. Just like in 2007, we knew that going in but you just have to hope there are no conflicts. This is one of the weeks I wished the game was moved for rain."

FBC began leasing the air time for the Gaffney broadcasts from WOLT after WAGI was leased to Davidson Media Group early last year, leaving the Indians without a radio home for the first time since 1971.

In addition to the WOLT broadcast, FBC and its sponsors have provided free internet streaming feeds of the game and a toll free dial up service for those persons without access to the internet and for those who may be traveling.

"The number of listeners logging on to those services are phenomenal," Fowler said.

Records indicate more than 58,000 of telephone listening minutes to the broadcast have been logged already during the 2008 season with the internet stream logs showing even greater numbers.

The Indians' broadcast with Fowler, Fabian Fuentes and Charles Wyatt begins at 6 p.m. Friday from Summerville with kick off slated for 7:30 p.m.

It can be heard on the live internet stream by logging on to www.wagifm.com or by dialing 1- 800-846-4700 and entering team code 4233.

Fowler said the availability of WOLT 103.3 FM will depend on other conflicts with Furman University basketball if the Indians advance in the playoffs.
