Long questionable for game against Morgan State

S.C. State plans to practice former Gaffney quarterback Malcolm Long (shoulder) this week to check on his progress. His status for Saturday's game against Morgan State will be determined following a second examination by the team doctor.

Long, the team's regular starting quarterback, did not play in a 56-0 win over Howard last week. He has thrown for 1,628 yards and 10 touchdowns this season.

With two games left, S.C. State (8- 2) need a win to clinch the Mid- Eastern Athletic Conference title and their first automatic playoff berth since 1982.

Tusculum 45,

Linebacker Jarvis Littlejohn (Gaffney) had eight tackles and helped on a quarterback sack Saturday as Tusculum won a share of the South Atlantic Conference title.

Tusculum (8-3) will play Albany State Saturday in the first round of the NCAA Division II playoffs.

Wofford 33,

The Citadel 28

Senior wide receiver Andy Strickland caught a 57-yard touchdown pass and set another score with a 26-yard punt return. The former Gaffney star finished the game with 88 yards in total offense, including 31 yards rushing.

Wofford (7-2 overall) travels to Southern Conference newcomer Samford Saturday for the final regular season road game.

Appalachian State 47,

It was a short day at the office for Appalachian State center Brett Irvin.

Irvin, a Gaffney High product, helped the Mountaineers' offense gain 328 yards and take a 35-7 halftime lead. Four of the Mountaineers five first-half scoring drives went 80 or more yards. Irvin and the team's other starters did not play much in the second half.

The Mountaineers can clinch their fourth straight Southern Conference title and an automatic playoff berth with a victory Saturday over Elon.

Gardner-Webb 23,

Coastal Carolina 18

Former Gaffney receiver Nick Melton caught two passes for 28 yards. Tyson Petty (Gaffney) returned one kickoff for 16 yards.

Gardner-Webb lost for the fifth time in five seasons to Coastal Carolina.The loss ended a shot at the Bulldogs' first Big South Conference title since 2003, as Liberty (4-0 Big South) clinched its second trophy in two seasons with a win at VMI.
