Saints advance in NCAA tourney with 2-1 victory The Limestone College men's soccer team advanced in the NCAA tournament with a 2-1 victory against Lander University on Wednesday afternoon at Saints Field. The Saints, ranked No. 24 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association NCAA Division II rankings, improve to 16-2-2 on the season. The Bearcats close their season with a 12-5-2 record. Tusculum College will host the remaining rounds of regional play in Greeneville, Tenn. Limestone will play Lees-McRae today at 4 p.m., with the winner of the Francis-Marion/Carson-Newman game facing Tusculum at 7 p.m. on November 14. The final regional game will take place on November 16. at 2 p.m. in Greeneville, Tenn. The Saints got on the board in the 19th minute, as Michael McEmerson played the ball forward to Keegan Ziada. Ziada, who went one-on-one against Lander's goalkeeper, flicked the ball over the keeper's head for his fifth goal of the year. Limestone added another goal in the 62nd minute. Andrew Kennedy passed the ball to Sean Boyle. Boyle blasted the shot into the back of the net for his first goal of the year. Lander continued to fight back and finally scored in the 84th minute with a goal from a throw-in as Ivan Stoykov cut Limestone's lead to one. The Saints defense buckled down in the remaining minutes to keep the Bearcats from equalizing. Limestone edged Lander 5-4 on shots on goal, but the Bearcats outshot the Saints 17-10 for the match. Limestone had the 7-5 advantage on corners. Lander goalkeeper Billy Hale and Limestone goalkeeper Mark Davidson each posted three saves. The Saints will face a tough opponent on Friday when they take on league-rival Lees-McRae at 4 p.m. The No. 13-ranked Bobcats are the 2008 Conference Carolinas tournament and regular season champions, and defeated Limestone 3-1 during the regular season. The NCAA Division II men's soccer tournament quarterfinals are slated for Nov. 22 or 23, with the semifinal and final rounds NCAA Championship taking place on Dec. and 6 in Tampa, Fla. |
