Motorcycle event will honor solders killed in Afghanistan

      Gone, but never forgotten. Four S.C. Army National Guard soldiers killed in Afghanistan will be honored for their sacrifice to their comrades and the nation this weekend as members of the 218th Brigade host a motorcycle ride across portions of the Upstate.

POLICE REPORT
      The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office is investigating a Nov. 15 incident during which a shot was fired into a dwelling on Providence Creek Road. According to a police report, someone fired a shot into a home in the 100 block at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday, causing about $200 in damage. Police said they recovered a small-caliber bullet from the residence.

Voters approve $933 million in new schools

      Despite an economic downtown, South Carolina voters shelled out big bucks in November in support of new school buildings. Voters approved all six building referendums on the ballot in the Nov. 4 general election. This will result in $933 million in new school construction in Greenwood 52, Horry County, Lexington 1, Lexington-Richland 5, Marlboro County and Richland 2.

Junkyard law to be reviewed

      Local junkyard operators will have their say Thursday about the controversial ordinance they claim unfairly singles them out for regulation. The junkyard operators are invited to voice their comments during the Cherokee County Citizens Planning Commission meeting Thursday at 4 p.m. at the county administration building.

BHS band member joins Clemson band for a day

      Tanner Hughes has spent many Saturdays sitting in Death Valley cheering on the Clemson football team. The Blacksburg High senior experienced the game from a different viewpoint at last weekend's Clemson- Duke football game. He was among 107 high school seniors who performed with the Clemson University marching band as part of "High School Senior Day.

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
     Belle, at center, played by Holly Weiss of Gaffney during a Saturday afternoon performance of Disney's Beauty and the Beast at Limestone College's Fullerton Auditorium, believes there must be something more than her provincial life in the opening act of the musical. The tale that unwinds before her proves she isn't wrong. Featuring a cast and crew of dozens, the popular musical, which opened Nov. 13, will have additional performances at Limestone College from Nov. 20 to 22. The musical is being presented by the Limestone College Theatre & Music Departments in association with the Cherokee County Arts Council and the Gaffney Little Theatre.

      WASHINGTON, D.C. - The South Carolina Presidential Inaugural Ball Committee has announced that the 2009 S.C. Inaugural Ball will be held Jan. 19, 2009, at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum in Washington. The black-tie event, which will honor the 44th President of the United States, will take place from 8 p.m.

Festival officials leaving door open concerning 'Peach Beach'

      The Peach Beach concert was one of the most popular events held by the South Carolina Peach Festival prior to it being discontinued. Discussions in recent planning workshops have centered on whether the festival can afford to bring back Peach Beach or stage a major event on a large county venue.
