Wait just a minute: Recount shows clear winner

If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

This is a lesson Grassy Pond Elementary School students can learn from last month's call totals for "Roll Call," the Gaffney Ledger's talking newspaper.

Grassy Pond Elementary teachers Terri Bridges and Charlene Key were locked in an apparent tie with 1,978 calls in October. The large call volumes reported for both teachers prompted reactions of surprise and shock during a visit to the school.

"This is just unreal," said Key, who teaches the school's gifted and talented students. "We have been studying the scientific process of making inferences and predictions in class this year. This is hard to explain."

The tie was broken when The Gaffney Ledger contacted EduCom Services President Bob Howe for comment on the unusual story. But Howe said he made a mistake in figuring the call totals for the teachers.

The correct report still shows Bridges with 1,978 calls. However, Howe said Key's extension number on "Roll Call" actually only received 963 calls.

Another Grassy Pond Elementary teacher, Starr Moore, was close behind with 940 calls.

The Gaffney Ledger received a total of 5,500 calls on its "Roll Call" service in October. The Gaffney Ledger had the third-highest call volume among newspapers served by EduCom Services.

The newspaper received 217 calls to its time and temperature extension on "Roll Call." A news information extension line received 319 calls.

"I think it's wonderful," Howe said. "The Gaffney Ledger continues to promote the Roll Call service in such a way that their call counts to teacher extensions continues to set records."
