Junkyard law to be reviewed

By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Staff Writer larry@gaffneyledger.com

Local junkyard operators will have their say Thursday about the controversial ordinance they claim unfairly singles them out for regulation.

The junkyard operators are invited to voice their comments during the Cherokee County Citizens Planning Commission meeting Thursday at 4 p.m. at the county administration building.

This is the second time the ordinance has been referred to the planning commission.

Following opposition from junkyard operators a year ago, council forwarded the ordinance to the Cherokee County Planning Commission for further discussion and changes.

Council was scheduled to consider first reading of the amended ordinance at its Oct. 6 meeting, but Cherokee County Councilman Charles Mathis made a motion to postpone action on the ordinance.

At that meeting, several junkyard operators questioned council members about why their names appeared on correspondence concerning the junkyard ordinance if they claim they aren't familiar with the contents of the amended ordinance.
