Born Sept. 21, 1943, in Union, she was the daughter of the late Dewey Frank Jordan Sr. and Dorothy Brooks Jordan. A graduate of Union High School, Dr. Martin received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Winthrop University.

He was first married to Essie Mae Littlejohn and to them seven children were born.
