Dr. Myra J. Martin

Retired teacher, professor

SPARTANBURG - Dr. Myra Jordan Martin, 65, of 18 Willow Run Terrace, died Thursday, Nov. 13, 2008, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 21, 1943, in Union, she was the daughter of the late Dewey Frank Jordan Sr. and Dorothy Brooks Jordan. A graduate of Union High School, Dr. Martin received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Winthrop University. She also received a Master of Education degree and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of South Carolina.

Dr. Martin was a fellow in the National Writing project, attending sessions at the University of California, Irvine. She was the chairman for the National Counsel of Teachers of English for the program to recognize excellence in student literary magazines. She served as treasurer and president of the Spartanburg Chapter of the International Reading Association and as secondary chairman of the S.C. Chapter of the International Reading Association. Dr. Martin also received scholarships from the International Association. She was a member of the Honorary organization, Phi Delta Kappa.

Dr. Martin retired in 2003 from Dorman High School, where she was an English teacher, and was an adjunct professor for 20 years at Converse College, where she created a number of new courses. She also taught at Spartanburg Technical College, Greenville Technical College and the University of South Carolina Upstate. She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Survivors include her husband, Timothy Grant Martin; her son, Michael Grant Martin and wife, Patricia Martin; her daughter, Katherine Martin Hobbs and husband, Ryan Charles Hobbs; a grandson, Ethan Charles Hobbs; two granddaughters, Montana Cudd and Morgan Martin; a brother, Dewey Frank Jordan Jr.; and a sister, Darlene Brooks Jordan.

In addition to her parents, Dr. Martin was predeceased by a sister, Debra Ann Jordan.

Visitation was held Sunday, Nov. 16, from 6-8 p.m. at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Services will be held Monday, Nov. 17, at 1 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Boiling Springs, conducted by Bishop G. Len Fletcher. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery in Union.

The family is at the home of her daughter, Kate Hobbs, 16 Willow Run Terrace, Spartanburg.
