Rocky picks off pass in Skins loss

Rocky McIntosh Rocky McIntosh Former Gaffney star linebacker Rocky McIntosh had a big game in a losing effort against the Dallas Cowboys Sunday night. McIntosh had an interception, five tackles and three assists in the loss that drops the Washington Redskins to 6- 4.

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver and former Gaffney High star Sidney Rice had two catches for 22 yards in a 19-13 loss to division leading Tampa Bay on Sunday.

Saints grapplers fall twice Saturday

The 15th-ranked Limestone wrestling team opened the season on Saturday against 13th- ranked Mercyhurst College and seventhranked Newberry College.

The Saints fell to Mercyhurst by a score of 17-24, and to Newberry 15-29.

Limestone fell behind early to Mercyhurst, losing in the 125- pound and 133-pound divisions. Jeremy Parker was able to put Limestone on the board when he pinned (2:59) Lance Pitcel in the 141-pound division. However, it was one of only four decisions for Limestone. Joby Shreckhise beat Kyle Raber in the 174-pound division 11-3, while Dan Scanlon beat Bryan Wolff 13-3. Trey Moss turned in the final Saints win, beating Nathan Sharp 7-5.

Sidney Rice Sidney Rice For the Saints, it would be much of the same against Newberry, dropping the 125-pound and 133- pound divisions. However, Parker would defeat Tony Washington, ranked fifth nationally in the 141- pound division, by injury default. Shreckhise also recorded a big win beating Bryant Blanton, ranked first in the region, 5-3 in the 174-pound division. Scanlon continued his strong start with a win over Jake Elkins, pinning him at 4:59.

Anderson eliminates Lady Saints

Anderson University defeated Limestone College 3-1 (23-25, 25- 20, 25-22, 25-21) Friday afternoon in the semifinal round of the Conference Carolinas Tournament in Williams Gymnasium in Banner Elk, N.C.

Limestone took the first game of the match, using a six point midset lead to outscore Anderson 25-23. In a close second game, Anderson took five of the last six points to even the match at 1-1 with a 25-20 win. The third game proved to be another close one with Anderson once again finishing on top by the score of 25-22.

In the fourth game, Limestone got down 16-8 but clawed its way back into the game, tying it at 18- 18. The Lady Trojans regained the momentum to clinch the match with a 25-21 victory.

Limestone's Melissa Thomas and Nina Milovanovic had 17 kills apiece. Milovanovic also served up 14 aces. Danielle Seibert put up 35 assists and had 13 service aces. Samantha Flannery and Lynn Milam had five and three blocks respectively for the Lady Saints.

Lady Saint named player of the year

Limestone College junior Melissa Thomas was named the Conference Carolinas Player of the Year at the 2008 Volleyball Honors Banquet that was hosted by Lees-McRae College Friday.

A first team All-Conference player as well, Thomas finished the regular season with a team high 387 kills and a conference high 3.91 kills per game average.
