"If you see a fireman with a boot in his hand this Friday, they're doing it for the safety team."
      The Cherokee County Fire Chiefs Association will join shoppers Friday at locations across the county but it won't necessarily be on the lookout for bargains. It's hoping, instead, that holiday shoppers might be able to spare some change.

Blacksburg adds officer to police force
      Blacksburg has added local resident Shane Godwin to the town's police force. After sifting through dozens of applications, town council settled on Godwin, who replaces former officer Derek Greer. Godwin will soon report to the police academy since this is his first job in the field of law enforcement.

GHS chorus to sing at governor's holiday ceremony
      Gaffney High School chorus members will help ring in the Christmas holidays by performing Sunday at the 42nd annual Governor's Carolighting. Gaffney High chorus teacher Lori Allison is taking 20 students to sing with the Governor's All-Star High School Chorus.

Red Cross offering CPR, first aid classes
      The Cherokee County Service Center of the American Red Cross is offering the following classes: Adult CPR and Standard First Aid, Monday, Dec. 1, 6-10 p.m. (fee); Infant and Child CPR, Tuesday, Dec. 2, 6-10 p.m. (fee); Community Educator Class, Wednesdays, Dec. 3 and Dec. 9, 9-11:30 a.m.

While deep-frying turkeys has been increasing in popularity in recent years, there's more to worry about than putting a dry bird on the dinner table.

POLICE REPORT
      For the second time in the last two months, a Hetty Hill Street church has become the victim of a gun crime. Some time between Nov. 16 and Nov. 23, according to a report at the Gaffney Police Department, someone riddled a church van parked outside the Bethesda Presbyterian Church with gunfire.

Bi-Lo selects PeachCenter Ministries for food drive
      A local nonprofit organization is getting a little help in its quest to provide some holiday cheer for the entire county. PeachCenter Ministries, which provides families in the community with money, medicine and other items to help them during times of need, will receive assistance from BI-LO Charities this holiday season.

Students gave reports on famous American citizens, ranging from astronaut Neil Armstrong and western action hero John Wayne to recent Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin.

      If you are anxious to get into the Christmas spirit, then Get Into Gaffney on December 5 and 6. The City of Gaffney and the Cherokee County Cultural Partnership (CCCP) announce Holiday Fest in Historic Gaffney, a two day event full of family activities throughout the city's Nationally Registered Historic Districts.

Hospital volunteers contribute to SAFE Homes
"This gift will help provide Christmas gifts for victims."
      On Wednesday, Nov. 5, 20 Upstate Carolina Medical Center volunteers contributed a portion of their earnings from the gift shop and cheer cart at the hospital to SAFE Homes-Rape Crisis Coalition to make Christmas a little happier for Cherokee County victims of domestic and sexual violence.

Adult ed students on 'fast track' to earning GED
      Raquel Perez wanted to set a positive example when her daughter started kindergarten at Luther Vaughan Elementary this fall. Perez dropped out of Gaffney High in the ninth grade when she became pregnant. After staying home to raise her daughter, Perez enrolled in adult education classes in October at the Cherokee Community Learning Center.

      Marlene Morgan, Associate Treasurer of the Carolina Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, has become a part of the Alzheimer's CURE Foundation, Inc. "We welcome Marlene into our very prestigious Advisory Committee", said Effie Marie Lascarides, Founder and President of the Alzheimer's CURE Foundation.

     PEACH FESTIVAL HONORS SOLDIERS In keeping with the theme of the 2008 S.C. Peach Festival, "Honoring those who serve. Paving the Road Home," the festival presented a check for $400 to local soldiers, a percentage of the proceeds from sales of T-shirts during the festival.
