2008-11-26 / Local News

For the second time in the last two months, a Hetty Hill Street church has become the victim of a gun crime.

Some time between Nov. 16 and Nov. 23, according to a report at the Gaffney Police Department, someone riddled a church van parked outside the Bethesda Presbyterian Church with gunfire. It was estimated that the van was struck at least 11 times and damage was estimated at $4,500.

A similar occurrence was reported in October. Sometime between Oct. 17 and Oct. 19, a van parked beside the house of worship sustained about $850 in damage when it was struck by gunfire.

It wasn't immediately clear if it was the same van in both incidents.

Police are reporting a string of lawn equipment thefts, as well as a string of shed break-ins, in recent days.

Someone forced entry to a shed in the 800 block of Beech Street on Nov. 20 and took a red-colored push mower, according to the Gaffney Police Department. The owner was unsure of the make or model but told police she wrote her name with a marker on the mower. It is valued at $200.

The Gaffney Police Department said someone broke into a storage shed in the 100 block of Maple Drive on Nov. 21 and took a yellow Cub Cadet weed trimmer, a leaf blower, women's RAM golf clubs, a Craftsman cordless drill and a Craftsman socket set. Theft losses are estimated at $1,550.

Around 5:15 a.m. on Nov. 21, police said someone broke into a shed in the 1000 block of North Logan Street. A red leaf blower and a green-colored weed trimmer valued at a combined $200 were taken.

In another report, the Gaffney Police Department said an Echo-brand leaf blower and 5-gallon gas tank was stolen from a property in the 1200 block of West Floyd Baker Boulevard on Nov. 22 some time between 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.

A burglar apparently made himself or herself something to eat during a Nov. 21 break-in of an East Junior High Road apartment.

According to a report at the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, the apartment resident found her back door kicked in on Nov. 21 at about 4:30 p.m. and noticed cooking utensils on the stove. The woman told police she was missing a frozen pizza and three eggs from her refrigerator.

A West Floyd Baker Boulevard payday lender was the target of a burglary.

According to the Gaffney Police Department someone broke into Carolina Pay Day Loans, 1100 W. Floyd Baker Blvd., between 2 p.m. Nov. 22 and 8 a.m. Nov. 24. Police said it appeared the burglar(s) used a brick to gain entry through a rear window. Once inside, the burglar(s) rifled through drawers and desks but nothing appeared missing. Damage is estimated at $200.
