Strickland named

all-conference

Former Gaffney High standout Andy Strickland was among nine players from Wofford College named to the Coaches All-Southern Conference Team as announced by the conference on Tuesday.

The Terriers had three players earn first-team honors, while six players earned spots on the second team. Terriers on the first team are running back Dane Romero, offensive lineman Derek Wooten and defensive lineman Mitch Clark.

On the second team are Strickland, offensive lineman Ben Quick, offensive lineman Ben Miller, defensive lineman Layton Baker, defensive back Mychael Johnson and defensive back Jason Leventis.

Strickland leads the Terriers in receiving with 31 catches for 594 yards and seven touchdowns. He is currently fifth all-time in school history in receiving yards and third in receiving touchdowns.

He is fifth in the SoCon in receiving yards per game this season.

Saint swimmers

Behind first place finishes in 10 events, the Limestone men's swimming team placed second at the Davidson Invitational.

The Saints recorded 662 points, while Davidson earned first place with 840 points. Gardner-Webb took third place (616) and Old Dominion (566) rounded out the field.

In only the second event, Limestone recorded a first place swim (6:49.90) in the 4x200 Freestyle Relay. The team of Craig Jordens, Chad McKenzie, Anders Melin and Gilles Gutnecht earned 40 points, to help buoy the Limestone effort.

The Saints came back in the third event with Jordens, Matt Parsonage, Melin, and Goran Majlat finishing first again (1:22.19), this time in the 4x50 Freestyle Relay.

Majlat would take first place (53.91) in the 100 backstroke, while McKenzie turned in a first place time (4:12.32) in the 400 Individual Medley.

The Saints were able to capture second through sixth place in the 50 Freestyle. Jordens narrowly took second, while Parsonage and Melin tied for third and Majlat and Gutnecht took fifth and sixth, respectively.

In women's action, Limestone earned a total of 380.5 points, finishing fifth out of eight teams. Davidson took first with 786.5 points, while Gardner Webb (668), North Florida (474), and Old Dominion (385) rounded out the top four.

Limestone's Donna Whickman recorded a first place time (57.28) in the 100 backstroke finals.
