Former Gaffney grads prepare for playoff action

Starting quarterback Malcolm Long returned to the lineup for the Bulldogs after missing three games due to injury. Long (Gaffney High School) completed 12 of 19 passes for 181 yards.

Long threw touchdown passes of 28-yards to Matt Washington and 31- yards to Phillip Morris. South Carolina State closes out the regular season 10-2 overall with a perfect 8- 0 league record.

The Bulldogs recorded three straight shutouts for the first time since 1971.

Appalachian State 35,

Appalachian State starting center Brett Irvin (Gaffney) helped the offense score 28 unanswered points to rally from a 10-7 halftime lead. Appalachian State secured a top playoff seed and will face South Carolina State in the first round of the playoffs.

The contest, one of eight firstround games, kicks off at noon at Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone, N.C., and will be carried live by ESPNU.

Wofford 35,

Furman 10 Senior wide receiver Andy Strickland of Gaffney caught 29-yard touchdown in the second quarter to help Wofford clinch a playoff spot for the second straight season.

Jarvis Littlejohn Jarvis Littlejohn Strickland finished with four catches for 54 yards.

Wofford will play No. 1 ranked James Madison Saturday in the first round of the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision Playoffs. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Delta State 27,

Tusculum 19

The NCAA postseason run came to an end Saturday for former Gaffney linebacker Jarvis Littlejohn and Tusculum in their loss to Delta State.

Littlejohn finished with six tackles and a sack. Littlejohn made a key tackle in the fourth quarter to help Tusculum defense prevent a score after Delta State drove to the 3-yard line. Tusculum ends its season at 9-4.
