Scrapbook will provide memories

By SCOTT POWELL Ledger Staff Writer spowell@gaffneyledger.com

Blacksburg High School students are compiling a scrapbook to help a 2-yearold girl remember her father when she is older.

Jared Harris was an art teacher at Blacksburg High for six years. The 36-yearold died in late October following a year-long battle with cancer.

The school's National Honor Society is asking alumni to send in their memories of Harris so it can be included in a scrapbook being compiled by the National Honor Society. Students become members of the Honor Society based on their academic service, leadership and community service.

Blacksburg High teacher Pam Hughes said the student group wanted to do the scrapbook to show the impact Harris had on the school and community.

"The BHS Chapter of NHS wants to honor the memory of Mr. Harris in a way that will be a window to his daughter. She is only 2 and will not really have memories of her dad," Hughes said. "Student and teacher memories of those who knew and loved him will be a way we can help her feel closer to her dad as she grows up."

The National Honor Society plans to compile a scrapbook that will be presented to Harris' wife, Chris, and their 2-year-old daughter Kara.

"We are looking for specific stories about Mr. Harris, or perhaps a memory of being a student in his class," Hughes said.

Scrapbook entries are limited to standard size pages of 8.5 by 11 inches. The deadline to send a message is Dec. 16.

If you are a BHS alumni who would like to include your memories of Harris, please contact Hughes at (864) 839-6371 or e-mail at pam.hughes@gw.cherokee1. k12.sc.us to submit a message for the scrapbook. Messages can also be dropped by the school office or mailed to Mrs. Pam Hughes, BHS, 201 West Ramseur Drive, Blacksburg, SC 29702.
