Limestone faces stern test in undefeated Newberry

By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Sports Editor larry@gaffneyledger.com

The Newberry Indians will be reaching back into history when they travel to Limestone on Saturday.

The Indians will be trying to go 5-0 for the first time since 1981-'82.

"They are real talented," Limestone men's basketball coach Brandon Scott said. "They have two Division I transfers and one of the best players in the (SAC 8)."

The Indians are coming off a 76-59 win over Allen Wednesday night.

In that game, Jesse Wheeler had a game-high 21 points and eight rebounds. Clemente Martin added 17 points for the Indians.

But the Saints are also undefeated entering Saturday's contest after opening the season with wins over North Greenville and Coker.

Freshman Stewart Clark had a big game against Coker with 27 points. Another newcomer, Spartanburg Methodist product Anthony Middleton, had 19 points and grabbed six rebounds.

Middleton is the Saints' tallest starter at 6-5. He's really a big forward but has been forced to play center.

"This is going to be a great test for us," Scott said. "Newberry is big and athletic. They love the open court."

The Indians try to disrupt their opponents' rhythm with a 1-2-2 press, the Limestone coach said.

Scott said the key for the smaller Saints will be dictate the pace of the game.
