Joyce G. Phillips
Joyce Marilyn Gilley Phillips, 78, of 273 Green Acres Road, formerly of 260 Quinn's Trail, Cowpens, passed away Thursday night, Nov. 27, 2008, at her home.
Widow of Charlie Wellford Phillips, she was born in Molino, Fla., a daughter of the late Thomas Clive and Either Barnhill Gilley. Mrs. Phillips was of the Baptist faith and retired from the Hoechst-Celanese Corporation after 14 years of service in the Draw-Twisting Department.
Surviving are five daughters, Wanda Sue Holcombe of Gaffney, Sally Anita Dale, Peggy Joyce Woods, both of Cowpens, Debra Renee Bonifay of Panama City, Fla., and Belva Dean Godfrey of Palmer, Maine; two sons, Gregory W. Irwin Sr. of Cowpens and Leon Alto Irwin Jr. of Gaffney; 20 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; a sister, Isabel Dowson of Milton, Fla.; four brothers, Jerry Gilley of Surprise, Ariz., Bill Gilley of Cordes Lakes, Ariz., Jim Gilley of Henderson, Tenn., and Everette Gilley of Cantonment, Fla.; and a close friend and neighbor, Tim Parks of Cowpens.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Phillips was preceded in death by a daughter, Cathy Ann Doolittle of Beach Island, S.C., and a son, Thomas Clive Irwin of the home.
Graveside services will be held Monday, Dec. 1, at 2 p.m. in Mount Olive Baptist Church Cemetery, Cowpens, conducted by Dr. Robert Kirby Jr.
Mrs. Phillips' body will lie in state at Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home Chapel from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, and from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1.
