10,000 candles will light up the night
Keri Bloomer helps Limestone College student athletes place 10,000 luminaries on campus and neighboring streets during last year's Christmas festivities at the school. A Christmas tradition that would be celebrated years later was definitely not part of the plan when former Limestone College professor Les Gregory decided to place luminaries in several areas on the school's campus.
Initially meant to honor one of his peers, fellow professor Lucy G. Wheeler, only 200 candles were used in 1985.
Now 24 years later, Gregory's idea has turned into a yearly ritual at the school, getting support from the college's student athletes and Cherokee County residents.
Shortly after dark on Saturday, Limestone will usher in the Christmas season by lighting 10,000 candles sitting on campus and other streets surrounding the college.
Hundreds of students and local residents with bags in hand will take to local roadways early Saturday, placing luminaries along College Drive and Rutledge Avenue, as well as portions of Petty, Johnson and Limestone streets.
In addition to the lighting of the luminaries, the Limestone Show Choir and Men's Ensemble will present its Sounds of the Season concert in Fullerton Auditorium. A unique and festive montage of holiday music, school Director of Alumni and Parent Programs K.C. Barnhill said he is expecting a full crowd.
"When we have the music performance, there is generally a good crowd," Barnhill said. "It's all a part of the festivities, and we're glad that more people are taking part in the school's Christmas tradition."
Following the concert, the ceremonial lighting of the college's Christmas tree will take place on the front campus.
Barnhill said his goal in coming years is to coordinate with city officials in scheduling Christmas activities.
"We want to combine efforts as it will create more of a buzz and get the entire town involved," Barnhill said. "It will definitely be fun for all."
