Museum has special Santa event planned
Jerry Wyatt is shown in the "Olde Tyme Santa" costume that will be worn for a Christmas event at the museum on Saturday, Dec. 6 from 2-5 p.m. This Santa Claus is from the Victorian Era. Cherokee County children will get to see Santa Claus in a different light at a holiday fest in historic Gaffney this weekend.
The county museum is presenting an "Old Tyme Santa" on Saturday, Dec. 6 from 2-5 p.m. This Santa Claus dates back to the Victorian Era, complete with a red cape and green elf-like boots.
Museum director Billy Pennington found this Santa Claus costume while doing research on how every child's favorite Saint Nick has changed over the centuries. Donations from community members allowed the museum to purchase the costume that will be worn by the "Old Tyme Santa."
"Santa Claus looked like a wizard in one of the older images we found online," Pennington said. "We thought it would be interesting to let kids see Santa Claus in a way they might not have seen him before."
Children can have their pictures taken with Santa Claus inside a museum exhibit room. Storytellers will present "Twas the Night Before Christmas" while children wait to see Santa.
The museum will have a Letters to Santa exhibit taken from children's letters that appeared in a 1935 Christmas issue published by The Gaffney Ledger.
"The children were asking Santa Claus for simpler things like candy and small toys in 1935. Some of these letters were written by people whose names will be recognized in the community," Pennington said. "It was interesting to read these letters and then compare them with some of the technology gifts that are on a kid's wish list today."
The museum activities will be held during "Holiday Fest," a series of Christmas events held in downtown Gaffney on Dec. 5-6.
The events kickoff Friday with a CAVA holiday show and art sale and Festival of Trees at 8:30 a.m. Starting at 6 p.m. there will be a Christmas on Limestone program and "Just Desserts" Gaffney Little Theater fundraiser.
Christmas movies will be shown in the county library on Friday, Dec. 5 from 12 p.m. until 4 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 6 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Limestone College will light luminaries and hold its Christmas on Campus activities on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 5 p.m.
