Lady Indians anxious for season tip-off
Work ethic and pressure defense key to season
      Gaffney High girls basketball coach Stacey Parris hopes the old axiom that "defense wins championships" or in this case the seasonopener holds true. The Lady Indans open the season today at Union and Parris said that defense will determine the outcome.

Indians ready for action
      Look for the best shot and play good defense. That's always been the Gaffney Indians credo, and that won't change this year. Gaffney opens the season today at Union with a team that returns four starters. Despite missing the playoffs a year ago, the Indians enter the season with high expectations and a No. 6 ranking in the state coaches poll.

      The Gaffney High wrestling program has dedicated coaches, talented wrestlers and support from the school administration. Now, will the wins follow? First-year assistant coach Dave Bush says yes. "The kids have been working real hard and I thik they'll be able to compete," said Bush, who wrestled at Limestone College.

      Blacksburg's Josh Elmore had 18 points and J.J. Lattimore scored 12 but it wasn't enough to prevent Spartanburg Christian from improving to 5-1 with a 58-48 victory on Thursday.

Jets Ellis charged by police
      FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - New York Jets defensive end Shaun Ellis was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana, speeding and driving without insurance after being pulled over by police last weekend. Ellis, the Jets' longesttenured player, was stopped last Saturday in Hanover, N.J.
